“Place names in Binh Duong”: The book contains many historical and cultural values

In order to preserve and disseminate valuable information to many people, the Provincial Historical Science Association has just organized the introduction of the book “Place Names in Binh Duong”. The book is not only the result of nearly 3 years of research, compilation and editing, but also a work of extremely special significance to the land and people of Binh Duong.

Preserve and promote historical and cultural values

The book “Place names in Binh Duong ” is edited by Dr. Huynh Ngoc Dang, Chairman of the Provincial Historical Science Association; People's Public Security Publishing House. This is the result inherited from the provincial scientific project “Research on place names in Binh Duong province”, chaired by the Provincial Historical Science Association and implemented for nearly 3 years.

The book, published and introduced to the public, not only affirms that the research efforts of the group of authors have finally reaped "sweet fruit", but also makes a meaningful contribution to preserving and promoting the historical and cultural values ​​of each locality and of the province, especially "in the context of merging provinces and cities, creating room for development, helping the country to grow, many place names will be lost... leaving many regrets in our hearts about the names of lands that are so familiar", as Dr. Huynh Ngoc Dang shared at the recent introduction of this book.

According to Dr. Huynh Ngoc Dang, each place contains behind it historical stories, hidden values ​​waiting for generations to continue to research and discover ... And those who carry out the work have made every effort to preserve for everyone, especially the next generation, the community memories, contributing to preserving the local cultural identity.

Among many books and documents written about Binh Duong land and people, this is probably the book with the most pages up to this point. The book is more than 2,280 pages thick, with 3,448 entries, 4,163 subcategories of place names arranged according to commune-level administrative units in 9 districts, towns and cities of Binh Duong province.

According to research, place names are classified based on etymology (language origin), such as: Pure Vietnamese, Sino-Vietnamese, combined, ethnic minority etymology, foreign languages ​​and by type with main types, such as: Place names indicating regions, place names indicating terrain, place names indicating construction works, administrative place names... This is a valuable source of information providing everyone with a lot of rich information about the origin and meaning of place names, thereby vividly recreating the history of formation and development of Binh Duong land.

Among many books and documents written about the land and people of Binh Duong, perhaps “Place Names in Binh Duong” is the book with the largest number of pages up to this point. The book is more than 2,280 pages thick, with 3,448 entries, 4,163 subcategories of place names arranged according to commune-level administrative units in 9 districts, towns and cities of Binh Duong province.

Quarterly reference materials

To introduce more than 4,000 sub-categories of place names to the public, the implementers and researchers not only went to the places to study and record what already existed, but also applied theories to find new things, even to criticize the old ones. Therefore, in this book, readers can find new interpretations besides familiar folk explanations, as the editor has introduced.

This book is an effort to preserve community memories, contributing to preserving local cultural identity; it is a useful reference document for management, research and education. In particular, the place names in the book are also a valuable source of information, helping managers at all levels name new administrative units in a scientific, harmonious, objective way, and with inheritance and continuity of local history and culture.

Highly appreciating the practical value of the book, Dr. Nguyen Hoang Thao, former Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, said that “Place Names in Binh Duong” is a reliable information channel for localities to refer to when naming hamlets, neighborhoods, and residential groups, instead of using dry ordinal numbers. Using place names associated with local history and culture will contribute to preserving traditional identity right from the grassroots level.

In order to preserve and widely disseminate this valuable source of information for many people to read, research and learn, the Provincial Historical Sciences Association has donated books to the Provincial Library, the Provincial Museum and the Department of Culture, Science and Information of districts and cities in the province, as well as many units and individuals.

In the coming time, the association will continue to donate books to localities after the new administrative units are arranged and put into operation so that people in need can access this meaningful source of documents.
