On August 9, Dr. Nguyen Trong Tai, Department of General Trauma Surgery, Viet Duc Hospital ( Hanoi ), said that the department had just received a case of dangerous multiple trauma caused by a phone exploding while charging.
The patient was transferred from Bac Thang Long Hospital (Hanoi) on the morning of August 6, after receiving initial first aid.
The patient suffered serious damage to the maxillofacial area, causing a ruptured right eyeball.
At the time of admission, the 37-year-old female patient (from Bac Giang ) was in a life-threatening condition with injuries all over her body. The patient's jaw and face had many deformed wounds, a ruptured right eyeball, and a wound in her neck trachea that still had a foreign object, a piece of plastic, deeply embedded.
In addition, the patient's entire chest, abdomen, and thighs were also covered with injuries. In particular, the patient's right hand was injured, with the fingers almost crushed.
According to Dr. Tai, the patient was transferred to the emergency operating room with a multi-specialty surgical team. The doctors removed the foreign object stuck in the injury and amputated the fingers of the right hand. The right eyeball was ruptured, so the doctors from the Central Eye Hospital came to perform the surgery and removed the eyeball, causing the patient to permanently lose vision in the right eye.
The patient’s husband said the accident happened when she was home alone. Her phone ran out of battery, so the patient plugged it in and used it while charging. The type and origin of the phone the wife used were also unknown.
Patient admitted to hospital with multiple serious injuries
Doctor Tai warned that accidents that occur when using a phone while charging are very dangerous. In the past 2 years, Viet Duc Hospital has received at least 5 cases of serious injuries due to phones exploding while being used while charging. Many accidents caused by phones exploding while charging have resulted in amputations, facial burns, and injuries all over the body.
Therefore, doctors recommend that people should use quality phone chargers and absolutely not use the phone while charging to avoid problems.
