New diet could put diabetes in remission in 5 years
A weight loss programme using soups and protein shakes as part of the NHS 's programme could "reverse" type 2 diabetes.
New data shows that the method can help patients with type 2 diabetes stay in remission for at least five years, according to Yahoo News.
Previous research funded by the UK government found that around a quarter of diabetics went into remission within two years of starting a low-calorie “soup and protein shake” diet. Now, in this ongoing study, the authors have found that the diet kept the disease in remission for a further three years, making it five years.
Patients on the "soup and protein shake" diet lost an average of 20 pounds at the five-year mark, and they no longer needed medication to control their blood sugar.
What is the soup and protein shake diet?
Half of the participants in the study, called the Diabetes Remission Trial (DiRECT), had previously followed a low-calorie diet with the guidance of health professionals.
