Natural conditions of Hai Phong

Hai Phong has a rather complex and diverse terrain, including both mainland and islands, divided by rivers and canals, with the largest river density in the Northern Delta. The entire territory of Hai Phong is divided into 3 main regions: (1) Low, strongly dissected rocky areas occupying about 10% of the natural area, mainly concentrated in Cat Ba archipelago, Long Chau and some other islands in Lan Ha Bay, Ha Long; (2) Strongly dissected hill areas, occupying about 5% of the natural area, mainly concentrated in the North of Thuy Nguyen district; (3) Plain areas, occupying about 85% of the natural area, distributed in most districts and inner-city areas.

Hai Phong is located in the monsoon region, with hot and humid summers and heavy rains and cold and low rains in winters. The climate has both the general characteristics of the Northern Delta climate and the unique characteristics of coastal areas. The average annual temperature is 24.4°C; the average annual rainfall is 1,343.9mm; and the average annual humidity is 90%.

River system: Hai Phong's river network has an average density of 0.6 - 0.8 km/ km2 . There are 6 main rivers and 9 tributaries with a total length of about 300 km, namely Bach Dang River, Cam River, Lach Tray River, Van Uc River, Thai Binh River, Luoc River... In addition to the main rivers, there are large and small tributaries that divide the city's terrain such as Gia River (Thuy Nguyen), Da Do River (An Lao - Kien An - Kien Thuy - Duong Kinh - Do Son), Tam Bac River...

Hydrological regime: Hai Phong sea area has a typical homogeneous diurnal regime with diurnal tides: Height 3.7-3.9m, highest is +4.44m, stable tidal cycle lasts 24 hours, low tide appears in July and August; high tide appears in December and January.
