Durian, green-skinned grapefruit... attract customers

Fruit Logistica is the world's largest international exhibition of fruits and vegetables - 2024, taking place from February 7 to 9. This is the 4th time Vietnam has participated in the fair, with 7 booths. The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (Vinafruit) in coordination with the Trade Office and the Embassy of Vietnam in Germany organized for businesses to attend the fair. There are 6 businesses participating directly, including the brands Thanh Long Hoang Hau, AntFarm, Viet Tropical Fruit, Golden Bee Import-Export, Phuoc Hy, Natural Fruit... and 2 businesses entrusted to Vinafruit, Pico AgriViet Company and Vinagrin Import-Export Company.

Vietnamese businesses sell fruits and vegetables during Tet in Europe

From Germany, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of Vinafruit, shared with Thanh Nien : Enterprises have postponed the traditional Tet holiday to bring Vietnamese specialty fruits to Europe to introduce to international friends. Maintaining the presence of the Vietnamese pavilion at the annual Fruit Logistica fair has a ripple effect on Vietnamese agricultural products because this is one of the world's largest international trade fairs for fresh fruits and vegetables held in Europe.

"Businesses have brought durian, green-skinned grapefruit, jackfruit, dragon fruit, passion fruit, etc. to invite visitors to try their products. Our tropical fruits have been very positively received by international friends," Mr. Nguyen commented.

Currently, Germany's leading Asian supermarket chains such as AsRopa, Netto, Edeka, Selgros have imported and distributed Vietnamese fruit products, especially durian and green-skinned grapefruit. Other products such as fresh passion fruit, durian, dried jackfruit, dried banana, and dried dragon fruit are also of interest.

On the opening day of the fair (February 7), the Trade Office, the Embassy of Vietnam in Germany, together with the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association Vinafruit, organized a trade program between Vietnamese enterprises and Asropa Food GmbH (which is in need of importing dragon fruit and green-skinned grapefruit), and Selgros Company, a Cash & Carry supermarket system (which has more than 40 supermarkets in Germany and distributes more than 6,000 food products and is in need of directly importing fruits from Vietnam).

Will grow double digits

Mr. Nguyen said: There are currently two issues to note when bringing goods to Europe. First, the EU is an almost difficult market, especially when it comes to food safety issues. Second, inflation will affect purchasing power and tensions on the Red Sea. These are challenges in bringing goods from Vietnam to the EU in 2024.

Vietnamese tropical fruits and vegetables attract many customers

However, the demand for fruit and vegetable consumption in the EU market is very large and has potential. Looking back at history, in 2022, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports to the EU reached over 200 million USD; by 2023 it was 300 million USD; most likely in 2024 it will grow by at least 20% compared to 2023.

"The growth potential is good because many Vietnamese enterprises have enough qualifications, knowledge and experience to supply goods to the EU safely and sustainably. Regarding the Red Sea tension, items such as green-skinned grapefruit and fresh coconut have a long shelf life and if they take a detour, their quality will not be affected. Other fresh fruit items may have to be transported by air. Frozen and processed products such as durian, coconut, passion fruit, mango, etc. can still be transported in refrigerated containers. Vietnamese enterprises are looking for ways to boost exports to the EU to take advantage of the free trade agreement (FTA) between the two sides. The tariff advantage will help tropical fruits and vegetables from Vietnam become more competitive in the EU market," said Mr. Nguyen.

140 countries attended the fair

In 2024, Fruit Logistica Fair will have 2,770 enterprises (2,610 in 2023) from 94 countries and territories participating in 27 Halls (buildings), attracting about 50,000 visitors and enterprises from over 140 countries around the world. Fruit Logistica covers all business areas, processing fresh fruit and vegetable products, providing an overview of innovations in fruit preservation, processing and packaging technology, the latest products and services as well as distribution channels in the international supply chain.

Fruit and vegetable export target in 2024 will bring in 6.5 billion USD

In 2023, fruit and vegetable exports will reach a value of 5.6 billion USD, an increase of 167% over the previous year. In particular, the Chinese market will reach 3.6 billion USD, an increase of 238% over 2022. Durian exports will reach 2.241 billion USD, an increase of 430% over the previous year. In 2024, the fruit and vegetable industry's target is to continue to grow strongly with a turnover of up to 6.5 billion USD.
