Unique hammer painting on glass

For about 2 years now, the small room of about 20 square ^meters in Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City of Nguyen Dinh Thang (29 years old) has started to become more cramped. Because, in addition to composing music and teaching guitar, Thang also has a new passion: "typing" paintings.

The small room is both a place to rest and a place for Mr. Thang to create art.

"I accidentally saw a video on social media showing a Swiss artist using a hammer to tap on glass, the cracks forming a picture. At that moment, my head started to "jump numbers" and I became interested in this type of painting" - Mr. Thang said.

Holding two hammers in his hands, the artist introduced that these were special paint brushes. At first, he bought many hammers to try. From the original hammer, Mr. Thang further polished it to get the most suitable and satisfactory hammering head.

While typing, he constantly compared it with the original painting to avoid mistakes. According to Mr. Thang, this type of painting is not popular in Vietnam, so at first he encountered many difficulties in creating a satisfactory work.

"Double-layered glass is most suitable for this type of painting. Depending on the requirements of the painting, I choose glass with the appropriate thickness. The smaller the painting, the more difficult it is to tap, especially details such as the eyes, eyelids, etc. If the tapping force is not controlled well, long cracks will damage the painting" - Mr. Thang explained.

Mr. Thang often converts the photo to black and white to highlight the facial details, making the typing process easier.

Mr. Thang said that good tapping techniques will make the painting much more valuable. Although the hammer is used directly on the glass layer above, most of the cracks are created in the glass layer below. Therefore, the surface of the painting is almost smooth.

It takes young artists 2-7 days to complete a work, the price ranges from several million to several tens of millions of dong (depending on the artistic level of the painting), many glass paintings have been "exported".

Previously, Mr. Thang had tried his hand at many different types of painting such as color painting with a brush, paint splash painting, etc. The artist said that each painting method has its own interesting points.

With stained glass, the simplicity of black and white requires the artist to be meticulous and careful. Depending on the light, the painting will have different depths.

"Knocking on paintings is a bit noisy, so I usually do it in the morning or early afternoon. The rest of the time I teach music and compose music. Even though I work continuously, I don't feel tired or pressured. It's simply a passion and a hobby," Thang said with a smile.

For Mr. Thang, painting and music are two endless passions. He can spend all day in his room creating art.

Currently, Mr. Thang is researching and learning about the types of paint that can stick to glass. With his creativity and passion for innovative art, the young man plans to combine glass painting and paint painting together.
