Although Binh Duong has an industrial park with rapid development, it has still preserved many ancient cultural values. This ancient house is over 130 years old and is a rare place today, being both a historical and architectural relic and a place of worship and residence for a family.

Explore the ancient house

Tran Cong Vang ancient house is located in Thu Dau Mot market row, at 21 Ngo Tung Chau (Phu Cuong ward, Thu Dau Mot city, Binh Duong), considered the oldest ancient house in Binh Duong. The building is considered a rare historical - architectural relic with an age of more than a hundred years that is still inhabited.

The ancient house covers an area of over 500m2 on a plot of land of 1,333m2 , with a unique architectural style, reflecting the culture of Vietnam in the 19th century. The house was recognized as a national monument in 1993 and restored in 2005. During this process, the entire house was dismantled by skilled workers from Hue, the foundation was raised by 40cm and reassembled to its original state.

Currently, the family of Ms. Tran Thi Anh Tuyet (daughter of Mr. Tran Cong Vang) is living here and taking care of and preserving the house. Ms. Tuyet said that the house was built by Mr. Tran Van Long from 1889-1892, and she is the second generation to take over and preserve this over 130-year-old house. The special thing about this ancient house is that it is made of precious wood, from the system of columns, rafters, and slats of the house, to the interior items, carved decorative patterns, and mother-of-pearl inlays... The yin-yang tiled roof looks mossy but does not shed raindrops.

After more than 130 years, the Tran Cong Vang ancient house still retains its original architecture. That is also what attracts visitors to come and learn. There are many decorative objects and furniture in the house, most of which are antiques. The entire architecture of the house and the artifacts inside show us the lifestyle of a wealthy family in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, demonstrating the development of the lives of Vietnamese residents in Binh Duong.

Journalist Nguyen Quoc Liem, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Binh Duong Newspaper

Visiting the house, reporter Ngoc Dung, Phu Yen Newspaper said: From the outside, the house looks nothing special, but inside is a very beautiful space. This not only speaks of the prosperous life of the previous owner, but also the skillful creativity of the carpenters of the past; the appreciation and preservation through generations.

After being introduced to the architecture inside the house by Ms. Tran Thi Anh Tuyet, we noticed the exhibits with elaborate carvings, from the base of the columns to the roof, tables, chairs, cabinets, altars... to the four-panel paintings, all are delicately carved, creating a magnificent yet warm space. The carvings such as trees, flowers, birds, animals, objects, and geometric shapes have symbolic meanings with soft and graceful lines.

In addition to its artistic values, Tran Cong Vang ancient house also contains many cultural values. In the house, there are still many pairs of parallel sentences written in Chinese characters with cultural significance, expressing the life philosophy of the ancients.

The reception area spans from the second to the fourth colonnade, with tables and chairs arranged for guests to sit on. In the living room, there is a large round marble table in the middle, on which is placed the Eight Treasures (eight ancient weapons) stand, and chairs are arranged around it. Each chair is delicately carved and has deep meaning.
