Currently, nursing work still faces many difficulties and challenges when human resources are lacking in both quantity and quality. Therefore, patient care still requires the participation of patients' families.

It is worth noting that currently nursing training has not been standardized in terms of diplomas, certificates, etc., so it has not met the integration needs of countries in the ASEAN region.

Dr. Duong Huy Luong - Deputy Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management ( Ministry of Health ) emphasized this when speaking at the 2nd National Cancer Nursing Conference held on May 23 in Hanoi.

The Deputy Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management analyzed that in medical examination and treatment, nursing plays an important and indispensable role. If doctors are the ones who prescribe and diagnose diseases for patients, nurses are the ones who take care of patients both professionally and mentally. However, in reality, the shortage of nursing human resources is not only happening in Vietnam but is common in developing countries.

“The team of oncology nurses has made very important and effective contributions in areas such as: Policy development, care management organization, training, care practice and scientific research. However, the nursing human resources are lacking in quantity and have lower professional capacity than many countries in the region. Many nurses do not practice in accordance with their training degrees. Nursing training does not meet practical and integration requirements. The nursing leadership and management system is not suitable,” Dr. Duong Huy Luong pointed out.

Therefore, Mr. Duong Huy Luong suggested that leaders at all levels of the health sector continue to pay attention, invest, recognize and honor the role of nurses, focus on raising awareness of the importance of nursing work, and develop nursing human resources. In addition, it is necessary to promote the development of technology and equipment to improve the quality of comprehensive patient care in medical examination and treatment facilities, meet the requirements of practical care and integration to achieve the goals of sustainable development, universal health insurance and health for all.

In the coming time, the health sector will focus on comprehensive innovation in training as well as developing nursing capacity, management capacity... so that this force can integrate with nurses in the ASEAN region in terms of communication, capacity and expertise.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Health, there is a serious shortage of nursing staff. In 2024, the nursing ratio in Vietnam is estimated to be 18/10,000 people, much lower than the world average. The Ministry of Health's 2021-2030 health network planning report, vision 2050, proposes a target of 15 doctors and 25 nurses per 10,000 people by 2025; by 2030, 19 doctors and 33 nurses per 10,000 people.

Professor Le Van Quang - Director of K Hospital said that cancer prevention is still a big challenge for medicine in the world and the role of nursing is extremely important. Nursing is not only about performing technical procedures, but also building a close relationship with patients, listening, providing emotional support, pain relief, managing side effects and facilitating the recovery process of patients. Staff working in cancer nursing require sensitivity, empathy and extensive professional knowledge. Therefore, the World Health Organization has affirmed: Nursing care services are one of the pillars of the health system.

At K Hospital, there are 800 nurses. Although human resources are still lacking, the hospital staff tries to overcome the shortage to provide the best care for patients.

The 2nd National Cancer Nursing Conference with the theme: "Improving the quality of cancer patient care: From theory to practice," with the participation of nearly 1,000 domestic cancer nursing experts and scientists and international experts from Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, etc.

Experts at the workshop provided knowledge, research results, and practices from domestic and international experts in many fields such as surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, palliative care, nursing, and cancer patient management to improve the quality of patient care./.
