Ky Son is the most difficult mountainous border district in Nghe An province. Despite harsh natural conditions, thanks to its advantageous climate and vast land area, the local people have promoted buffalo and cattle farming to develop the economy .

From small-scale livestock farming, people have learned to invest in farm-based livestock production. Families raise 5-10 buffaloes and cows, while larger farms may have up to 40-50 animals. Instead of letting livestock roam freely in the forest, people are gradually moving towards raising them in enclosed farms, planting elephant grass, milkweed, corn, etc., to supplement their feed sources.

The Mong ethnic minority people in Nghe An province have escaped poverty thanks to a livestock farming model.

Previously, the family of Mr. Ly Va Xenh (residing in Truong Son village, Nam Can commune, Ky Son district) was a poor household in the village, with their economy dependent on farming. Since the 2000s, with support from the government in providing breeding cattle, his family now has a large herd, providing a stable income of 100-150 million VND per year. Thanks to this money, Mr. Xenh's family can cover their living expenses and pay for their children's education.

“Previously, cattle were mainly brought into the forest to roam freely, and their primary food source was natural, so in winter, cattle often lacked food, contracted diseases, and died from the cold. However, in recent years, thanks to the awareness campaigns of the local government, people have changed their production methods, helping to increase productivity and alleviate poverty,” Mr. Xenh shared.

To boost the animals' immunity and prevent diseases, ensuring the herd's healthy growth, Mr. Xenh feeds his cows extra salt twice a week. The Hmong man explains that salt helps the cows digest food better. In addition, he cultivates large areas of elephant grass, providing a food source for the cows during the cold season, so the herd is always well-fed and healthy.

Livestock farming has become a "bright spot" in the poverty reduction efforts in Ky Son district, Nghe An province.

Over the years, the People's Committee of Ky Son district has implemented many policies and mechanisms, promoting the conversion of buffalo and cattle farming from free-range grazing to semi-grazing or confined farming to suit local production conditions. Thanks to active dissemination of information and encouragement of people to vaccinate their animals against diseases, the buffalo and cattle herds rarely get sick, avoiding risks during the farming process.

According to Mr. Tho Ba Re, Vice Chairman of the Ky Son District People's Committee, the number of buffalo and cattle in the district has continuously increased in recent years. Livestock farming has become a "bright spot" in the local poverty reduction efforts. Currently, in addition to free-range grazing, people also have many other forms of livestock farming such as confined breeding, fattening, and selling, thereby increasing economic efficiency.

“The district has identified livestock farming as one of its key economic sectors, and has implemented many policies to support local people in developing their livestock herds and finding markets for their products. To enhance product value, the local government is promoting OCOP (One Commune One Product) products such as aged pork and aged beef… This contributes to increasing income for livestock farmers,” Mr. Re shared.
