Ky Son is the most difficult mountainous border district of Nghe An province. Despite the harsh natural conditions, thanks to the advantage of climate and large land, local people have promoted buffalo and cow breeding to develop the economy .
From small-scale livestock farming, people have learned to invest in livestock farming. Small families raise from 5 to 10 buffaloes and cows, large families can raise up to 40 to 50. Instead of letting cattle roam freely in the forest, people have gradually moved to raising them on farms, planting elephant grass, milkweed, corn, etc. to supplement food sources.
Mong people in Nghe An escape poverty thanks to livestock farming model |
Previously, Mr. Ly Va Xenh's family (living in Truong Son village, Nam Can commune, Ky Son district) was a poor household in the village, the family's economy depended on slash-and-burn farming. Since the year 2000, with the support of breeding cows from the State, his family now has a large herd of cows, providing a stable income of 100 - 150 million VND per year. Thanks to this money, Mr. Xenh's family can cover their living expenses and have money for their children's education.
“In the past, cattle were mainly brought into the forest to graze freely, and their main source of food came from nature, so in the winter, cattle often lacked food, got sick, and died from the cold. However, in recent years, thanks to the propaganda of local authorities, people have changed their production methods, helping to increase productivity and reduce poverty,” Mr. Xênh shared.
To help the animals have resistance, avoid diseases, and grow healthy, Mr. Xênh feeds the cows with salt twice a week. The Mong man said that salt will help the cows digest food better. In addition, he also grows more elephant grass as a food source for the cows in the cold season, so the cows are always fat and healthy.
Livestock farming has become a "bright spot" in the fight against hunger and poverty in Ky Son district, Nghe An. |
In recent years, the People's Committee of Ky Son district has also had many policies and mechanisms, promoting propaganda and mobilizing people to change the form of raising buffalo and cows from free-range to semi-free-range or confinement to suit production conditions. Thanks to active propaganda and encouragement of people to get veterinary injections and prevent diseases, the people's buffalo and cows rarely get sick, avoiding risks in the raising process.
Mr. Tho Ba Re, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ky Son district, said that in recent years, the number of buffaloes and cows in the district has continuously increased. Livestock farming has become a "bright spot" in the local poverty reduction effort. Currently, in addition to free-range grazing, people also have many other forms of livestock farming such as confinement, fattening and selling, thanks to which economic efficiency is increasingly high.
“The district has identified large-scale livestock farming as one of the key economic sectors, so it has many policies to support local people in developing livestock herds and finding outlets. To increase product value, the local government is promoting the production of OCOP products such as pork, beef, etc. Thereby, contributing to increasing income for livestock farmers,” Mr. Re shared.
