According to information from the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Center, at 11:17:21 ( Hanoi time), an earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale occurred in Muong Cha district, Dien Bien province.
The epicenter was determined at coordinates 21.747 degrees North latitude and 103.129 degrees East longitude, with a depth of about 10km. The disaster risk level was assessed as level 2 in the epicenter area. There have been no reports of human or property damage, but people in the epicenter and surrounding areas have clearly felt the shaking.

The center said it is continuing to monitor the earthquake and will update further developments if there are aftershocks or widespread impacts.
The Northwest region, especially Dien Bien province, is an area that regularly records seismic activity because it lies on deep fault zones. In the past, many strong earthquakes occurred here such as: the 1935 earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 on the Richter scale, the 1983 earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 on the Richter scale causing significant damage.
Experts warn that although Vietnam is not located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, the Northwest region is still at risk of major earthquakes and needs to be closely monitored. Raising public awareness and preparing for early response are key factors to minimizing future damage.
