However, a total of eight people were injured. The head of the Department of Disaster Risk Management and Defense at the Peruvian Ministry of Health , David Aponte, told local radio station RPP that three people had suffered minor injuries. Following the earthquake, Arequipa was hit by four aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 4 to 4.6, causing several landslides on local roads. Peruvian authorities said on social media that they were monitoring the damage and “determining what actions to take.”
The US National Tsunami Warning Center said there was a tsunami threat from the earthquake, adding that waves between 1 and 3 meters above tide level were recorded along some areas of the Peruvian coast.
However, Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen said the tsunami warning for the Arequipa coast had been canceled.
Carlos Zanabria, an adviser to the Arequipa regional government, told local radio station RPP that material damage had been reported in some districts and people had fled their homes out of fear, but he had not heard any reports of deaths or injuries.
Flavio Aranguren, mayor of Yauca district in Arequipa's Caraveli province, told RPP that several walls of houses in the district had collapsed. He also said no deaths had been reported.
Small artisanal gold mines operate in the town of Yauca and other nearby towns near the coast, but so far there have been no reports of damage.
Ricardo Guillen, a representative of the National Emergency Operations Center, said there were power and telephone line outages in areas near the epicenter of the earthquake.
Ecuador and Peru are part of the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a vast area surrounding the Pacific Ocean where collisions between continental plates frequently occur.
