A 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar today, March 28, causing major tremors in many neighboring countries.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) added that the earthquake occurred 16 km northwest of Sagaing city at a depth of 10 km at about 12:50 on March 28 (local time).
Meanwhile, the German Research Center for Earth Sciences (GFZ) said a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar. The epicenter was at a depth of 10 km near the city of Mandalay.
Myanmar did not immediately provide information on damage from the earthquake.

AFP journalists in Myanmar's capital Naypyidaw said roads were warped by the force of the tremors and pieces of ceilings fell from buildings.
CNN quoted a witness in Yangon city (Myanmar) saying that the earthquake came very quickly and strongly, and as soon as people knew, they ran out of the building.

"We have started searching around Yangon city to check for casualties and damage. So far, we have no information," an official from Myanmar's Fire Service Department told Reuters.
In the latest update, a major hospital in the Myanmar capital is a 'mass casualty zone' after the earthquake, AFP quoted officials as saying.
Social media posts from Mandalay showed collapsed buildings and debris strewn across the streets, but Reuters said it could not immediately verify the information.
Tremors in Bangkok, more than 1,000 km away
Hundreds of people poured out of buildings in the Thai capital Bangkok, more than 1,000 kilometers from the epicenter, Reuters reported. Witnesses in Bangkok said many people ran into the streets in panic and water splashed from swimming pools.
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said she postponed an official visit to the southern island of Phuket to hold an emergency meeting after the earthquake, according to a post on X.
Thailand's prime minister said Bangkok has declared a state of emergency after the earthquake.
Some subway and rail services have been suspended in Bangkok.

According to the Bangkok Post , residents of the capital Bangkok have evacuated many buildings, while businesses announced temporary closures due to the earthquake. A high-rise building under construction in the Chatuchak district also collapsed due to the earthquake.

An office building in central Bangkok swayed from side to side for at least two minutes, with doors and windows creaking loudly, witnesses told Reuters. Hundreds of workers fled through emergency stairs in a state of panic. Loud screams could be heard as the building continued to move. Outside, workers with medical kits were preparing to care for the elderly and those in shock.
According to CNN, water from a swimming pool on a high-rise building poured onto the streets of Bangkok after the earthquake. Video shared on social network X shows water overflowing the edge of the pool and pouring down below.

Vietnam and China are both affected
Tremors from a powerful earthquake that struck Myanmar were also felt in China's Yunnan province today, according to Beijing's earthquake bureau.
The China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) said the tremor had a magnitude of 7.9, with a CENC social media post saying "tremors were felt in Yunnan," according to Xinhua.
China's Foreign Ministry said it is closely monitoring the situation and will report back in a timely manner.
In Vietnam, many people also felt the tremors.
In India, some people also felt mild tremors.

There were six earthquakes of magnitude 7 or greater between 1930 and 1956 near the Sagaing Fault, which runs north to south through central Myanmar, according to the USGS.
In 2016, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake in the ancient capital of Bagan in central Myanmar killed three people, toppled stupas and collapsed temple walls at the tourist destination, according to AFP.
