A report by Oxford Economics and the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) also forecast that Chinese tourists’ spending in the domestic market this year will increase by 11% compared to 2019, the time before the pandemic “froze” tourism activities. WTTC President Julia Simpson said that Chinese tourists are starting to travel again and this number will continue to increase.
According to the expert, Chinese tourists are the driving force of the global tourism industry, with many countries eagerly awaiting the return of Chinese tourists as well as spending activities from the world's largest tourism market. In 2019, Chinese tourists took 170 million trips abroad and spent nearly 248 billion USD abroad, accounting for 14% of global tourism spending.
However, visa backlogs in countries like the US and higher international flight costs have led Chinese tourists to stay closer to home this year. Meanwhile, international arrivals to China have yet to recover. Spending by foreign tourists on the mainland this year is expected to reach 715 billion yuan, down about 25% from 2019.
China was one of the last major economies to reopen its borders after the Covid-19 pandemic and flights to the country have yet to fully resume.
