Speaking on MSNBC 's Inside With Jen Psaki, the Canadian Prime Minister affirmed that his government does not want a trade war with the new US administration, but will be forced to retaliate if the US imposes tariffs on Canadian goods.
According to export data from the US Department of Commerce, Canada is the largest buyer of US-made goods – about $320 billion in the period from January to November last year.
Washington ran a $55 billion goods trade deficit with Ottawa over the same period.
"As we did last time, we are ready to respond with tariffs if necessary. We are the number one export partner for about 35 US states and anything that increases trade barriers between our two countries will harm American people and jobs," Trudeau said.
On a per capita basis, Canada buys far more goods from the United States than Washington buys from Ottawa.
In a recent article, Bloomberg reported that the Canadian government is drafting a plan for retaliatory tariffs that would affect almost every product Ottawa imports from Washington.
During his first term as president, the Trump administration imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum in 2018.
In response, Canada imposed tariffs on a list of U.S.-made goods, including appliances, bourbon whiskey and boats. This time, Mr. Trump said he was considering imposing a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada.
