Bringing OCOP products into modern retail channels

Việt NamViệt Nam27/11/2024

Building display points and bringing OCOP products into supermarket systems is a strategic step to expand consumption channels and help local products reach consumers more closely.

Bringing OCOP products into the supermarket system

The commercial infrastructure in the province is currently developing strongly with the presence of many large distribution chains such as Lotte, Winmart, Coopmart along with a network of convenience stores and safe fruit sales points. This is a potential consumption channel if exploited effectively. However, a survey at a number of supermarkets in the province shows that although there are separate counters for OCOP products, the province's OCOP products are only in small quantities and not diverse. Consumers who want to buy more have no other way but to contact the manufacturer directly.

In recent times, departments, branches and localities in the province have made efforts to implement solutions to connect and promote products. In particular, the Department of Industry and Trade of the province regularly organizes many trade promotion activities, organizes fairs, and expands cooperation with large distribution systems at home and abroad.

Mr. Bien Tan Tai - Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade - said: "We have signed contracts with large supermarkets such as Coopmart Phan Thiet, Coopmart La Gi and Coopmart Phan Ri Cua to support booths to display, introduce and sell OCOP products. The Department is continuing to register with the Domestic Market Department - Ministry of Industry and Trade the Project "Building points to introduce and sell OCOP products in Binh Thuan province" in 2025 with an estimated budget of 300 million VND".

These efforts have helped OCOP products gradually affirm their brands, attract consumers' attention, and contribute to promoting production. However, consumption through modern retail channels still faces many difficulties. One of the reasons is that processed products are still limited, production scale is small, and competitiveness is limited. Many enterprises and cooperatives (HTX) share that meeting the standards to bring products to supermarkets is not easy at present, especially for small production facilities. Therefore, in the coming time, relevant departments and branches need to support cooperatives and small-scale OCOP enterprises in accessing supermarket standards, creating conditions for local products to go further.

To date, the province has 76 valid OCOP products, including 66 3-star products, 1 4-star product and 2 potential 5-star products. These products are traditional or local characteristics such as fish sauce, fresh dragon fruit and dragon fruit processed products (wine, dried dragon fruit, juice, etc.), seaweed, turmeric, cashew candy and seafood products.

In addition to the 2 points of introduction and sale of provincial OCOP products in Phan Thiet City established by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of the province. In 2022, the Provincial Cooperative Union continued to establish a point of display and introduction of cooperative products at 10 Hai Thuong Lan Ong, Phan Thiet City. After more than 1 year of operation, this display point has welcomed many groups of visitors to visit, shop, and exchange goods. Through this, tons of fresh agricultural products, processed products from dragon fruit, fish sauce and seafood have been introduced to consumers inside and outside the province, contributing to affirming the value of local products.

It can be said that although many positive results have been achieved, the consumption of OCOP products still faces many challenges. According to experts, in order to develop sustainably, businesses and cooperatives need to focus on improving product quality, investing in deep processing, ensuring stable output and improving packaging designs to attract consumers. Telling the story of the origin of the product associated with local culture is also an effective way to create a distinct mark. At the same time, strengthening trade promotion and professional advertising activities will help OCOP products expand the market further.
