As Europe grapples with the conflict in Ukraine, concerns over illegal migration and a scramble for new energy sources, the leaders of the eurozone's first and third largest economies , Germany and Italy, met in Berlin to discuss a number of pressing issues, including the construction of a gas and hydrogen pipeline between the two countries and measures to tackle illegal migration.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister Scholz stated that the two countries wish to expand energy cooperation to ensure long-term supply; especially important is the construction of a hydrogen pipeline connecting North Africa and Europe, creating a southern corridor for gas and hydrogen. This is the first German-Italian intergovernmental meeting in the past 7 years.
