GĐXH - Spending 1 million VND on 2 jars of instant skin whitening cream bought at a spa near her house, after more than 1 month of applying it according to the instructions, Ms. B. had to be hospitalized...
According to information from Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, Ms. NTB (32 years old, Binh Duong ) said that she spent 1 million VND on 2 jars of instant skin whitening cream bought at a spa near her house. After more than 1 month of applying the cream daily as instructed, her skin became whiter, but began to thin and develop pustules. Blood vessels under the skin became more visible, accompanied by itching and burning sensation.
When her skin started to break out, Ms. B. returned to the spa selling the product and was advised to treat her acne with a course of 2.5 million VND for 4 times/month. After completing the course of treatment, her skin condition did not improve. Ms. B. always felt a burning sensation, more pustules appeared, and her face was red as if she was drunk. Worried about her condition, she went to Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for examination.

Here, Master Doctor Vu Thi Thuy Trang, a specialist in Dermatology - Dermatology Aesthetics at the hospital, said that Ms. B. suffered a stroke due to abusing cosmetics containing corticoids - a drug commonly found in mixed creams for quick skin whitening. Corticoids work by atrophying the dermis, making the skin thinner and brighter, but also destroying the skin's natural protective barrier. As a result, the skin becomes sensitive, easily irritated, has inflammatory acne, and dilated blood vessels on the face, especially the cheeks.
“Skin infected with corticosteroids often causes a stinging, burning sensation, accompanied by inflammatory acne and dilated blood vessels. If not treated promptly, this condition can lead to more serious complications such as skin atrophy or pigmentation disorders accompanied by prolonged redness and burning,” said Dr. Trang.
Ms. B. needed to stop using all her old cosmetics and stop her spa treatments. The doctor prescribed topical and oral medications to reduce inflammation, soothe the skin, and fight bacteria. After two weeks, her pustules and skin inflammation improved significantly.
To treat the dilated blood vessels and restore the skin surface, Ms. B. was prescribed a 4D laser treatment - with a long-pulse 1064nm wavelength that penetrates deep into the dermis, causing photocoagulation of blood vessels, thereby reducing the phenomenon of dilated blood vessels. The doctor said that she needed to do it about 3-4 times to completely reduce the blood vessels on her face.
How dangerous is using mixed skin cream?
Doctor Trang said that mixed cream is a homemade cream, which can combine many ingredients such as vitamin E, aspirin, becozyme, corticoid... In which, corticoid is an anti-inflammatory substance, long-term use can suppress the skin's immunity, inhibit the melanin production process, the skin will whiten quickly. This is also the reason why corticoid is abundant in mixed cream and is known as a fast skin whitening cream.
However, long-term use of mixed creams containing corticosteroids will cause complications including skin atrophy, causing skin "addiction" - when stopping use, the skin will react violently due to loss of resistance, thinning of the skin, dermatitis (acne, facial redness), stretch marks...
In addition to skin complications, corticosteroids from mixed creams absorbed into the skin can cause endocrine disorders, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, stomach ulcers, Cushing's syndrome, weight gain, decreased resistance, type 2 diabetes...
Doctor Trang said that the end of the year is the time when the demand for beauty increases, but there are also many potential risks when people choose quick beauty services or products of unknown origin.
To ensure safety, people should go to reputable medical facilities. Beautiful skin is not only smooth but also healthy. Aesthetic standards should go hand in hand with health, helping to welcome Tet happily.
