In 2025, the 10th grade entrance exam in Hanoi city had 115,951 candidates registered to take the exam, including 102,860 candidates taking the non-specialized public exam and 13,091 candidates taking the specialized exam.

The entire city will be divided into 201 examination sites in 30 districts, towns and cities with 4,411 examination rooms and 201 backup examination rooms.

Mr. Tran The Cuong, Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, said that one of the notable new points in this year's 10th grade entrance exam is the adjustment of the method of calculating admission scores. Instead of multiplying the coefficient by 2 for Math and Literature as in previous years; in 2025, the admission score will be the total score of 3 subjects (Math, Literature, Foreign Language), each subject is calculated on a 10-point scale and does not multiply the coefficient. This calculation method aims to ensure fairness between subjects, encouraging students to study all subjects equally.

Increase quotas, expand opportunities to enter public schools

To reduce pressure on students, Hanoi has raised the enrollment rate in public schools to about 64%, equivalent to nearly 80,000 targets, an increase of 3% compared to the previous school year.

In addition, Mr. Cuong added that in the coming time, there will be 3 new public high schools in the capital coming into operation, including Phuc Thinh High School (Dong Anh district), Do Muoi High School (Hoang Mai district) and a high school in Cau Giay district.

“Last year, the number of students admitted to grade 10 public high schools in Hanoi was about 61%, this year we have increased to 64%, not to mention the 3 high schools that the Department is inspecting and will soon grant operating licenses,” said Mr. Cuong.

For each of these new high schools, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training will try to assign a quota of 10-15 classes, with at least 450 students per school. Thus, the quota for public 10th grade in Hanoi this year will continue to increase by about 1,500 to 1,700 students.

Mr. Cuong said that in the coming time, the Department of Education and Training will assign additional 10th grade enrollment quotas to these public high schools. The Department will consider the option of "overflowing" enrollment (i.e. enrolling students not based on enrollment areas - PV) after the students have their 10th grade exam scores. However, the Department will also set a specific standard score, not taking all registrations, to ensure input quality.

“Currently, the number of students admitted to Hanoi public grade 10 in 2025 is 64%, adding the quota for these schools will certainly exceed the rate. This will contribute to meeting the needs and aspirations of students and parents,” said Mr. Cuong.

The head of Hanoi'seducation sector also said that this year's 10th grade exam in Hanoi will be within the scope of the program, the knowledge students have learned, and will have the structure and format as announced by the Department of Education and Training.

New regulations candidates need to note in the exam room

This year's Hanoi 10th grade exam also has many new points related to the test format, test time and items allowed in the exam room that candidates need to pay special attention to.

Notably, candidates are not allowed to bring the Geography Atlas into the exam room but can bring rulers and drawing tools. Candidates taking the Chemistry major exam are not allowed to bring the Periodic Table and Solubility Table.

To serve the exam process, candidates are allowed to bring into the exam room the following items: Pens; rulers; pencils; erasers; squares; graphing rulers; drawing tools; handheld calculators without text editing function and without memory cards.

Candidates are not allowed to bring into the examination room the following items: carbon paper; erasers; alcoholic beverages; documents, communication devices or information storage devices to cheat during the examination.

This year, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has unified all specialized subjects to take exams in 150 minutes, instead of the different durations as before.

For the Natural Science and Foreign Language exams for specialized 10th graders, this year candidates will take the test directly on the test paper. As for the Foreign Language exam for non-specialized public 10th graders, candidates will still take the test on the multiple choice answer sheet as every year.

Candidates should also note the names of the subjects for the entrance exam to specialized classes as follows: Natural Sciences (exam for specialized Physics, Chemistry, Biology classes); History and Geography (exam for specialized History and Geography classes).

“We also want to send a message to parents and students that the 10th grade entrance exam to public high schools is an important milestone, but it is not the only path. Parents need to create a comfortable atmosphere, not putting pressure on their children. The Department is committed to accompanying and supporting all students who wish to take the exam, creating learning conditions for them in many suitable forms, absolutely leaving no one behind,” said Mr. Cuong.

The entrance exam for non-specialized public grade 10 for the 2025-2026 school year will be held on June 7 and 8; the specialized exam will be held on June 9, 2025.

The Hanoi Department of Education and Training also mobilized 15,173 officials, teachers, staff, and police to participate in organizing exam supervision at exam sites and more than 2,000 officials and teachers to participate in exam marking; nearly 600 officials were assigned to perform exam inspection duties.
