On the morning of October 7, prolonged thunderstorms and strong gusts of wind at Noi Bai International Airport seriously affected flight operations, forcing 17 flights to wait and one flight to urgently divert to an alternate airport.

During the period from 8am to 11am on October 7, the capacity to receive aircraft at Noi Bai International Airport was adjusted to 5 flights/hour due to the impact of thunderstorms.
According to information from the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM), the Noi Bai area experienced extremely adverse weather conditions overnight and morning. Visibility dropped below 1km, wind gusts reached level 7, and especially wind shear appeared on the runway area - a dangerous factor for aircraft.
Deep reduction in aircraft acquisition capacity
The complex weather conditions forced the operator to activate Air Traffic Flow Regulation (ATFM), a measure to ensure maximum safety for aviation operations.
Specifically, Noi Bai airport's aircraft reception capacity has been significantly reduced. At night and early morning, the reception capacity is only 10-13 flights/hour. Notably, during peak hours from 8am to 11am, this capacity has had to be adjusted to the lowest level, only 5 flights/hour.
It was this adjustment that directly led to the disruption of aviation:
- 17 flights were forced to wait in the air.
- One flight had to divert to an alternate airport for safety.
Synchronized coordination, restore operations
As soon as the weather turned bad, relevant units proactively organized a Collaborative Decision Making (CDM) meeting to agree on a plan to regulate air traffic.
VATM representative affirmed: "Flight operations in adverse weather conditions are carried out according to procedures, ensuring synchronous coordination between air traffic management, air traffic control and aviation meteorology departments."
Flight control units such as Hanoi Area Control Center (ACC Hanoi), Approach Control Center (APP Noi Bai) and Noi Bai Aviation Meteorological Center have maintained close coordination, continuously updated meteorological information to adjust operation plans in a timely manner. On-duty crews have also been increased to ensure human resources and situation handling capacity.
"Thanks to this coordination, as soon as weather conditions improved, flights landed safely one after another, and no flights had to wait," said a VATM representative.
The timely application of operational measures not only maintains absolute safety in flight operations in the Noi Bai area but also helps to minimize the impact on the operating plans of airlines.
