According to the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture , in the seven days to November 9, the average price of rice at supermarkets nationwide rose to 4,444 yen (about $28) per 5-kg bag , 116 yen higher than the previous week. This is also the sixth consecutive week of price increases.

The price has surpassed the previous high - the time before the Japanese government had to release emergency reserves to sell to the market to stabilize prices. The survey, conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan at about 6,000 supermarkets, showed that the upward trend continued, although this year's harvest is considered relatively favorable and could help reduce price pressure.

While retail rice prices have increased sharply, transaction prices between distributors and wholesalers have shown signs of cooling down. However, experts say it will take time for this reduction to be passed on to the retail system.

Rice prices in Japan have jumped significantly in 2024 due to reduced production, adding to the cost of living for Japanese households as energy and other essential commodities prices continue to climb.
