Looking back at history, the first general election to elect the National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam on January 6, 1946 was a major event, opening the process of building a new democratic regime in our country.

The election is considered the basis to affirm the legitimacy and democracy of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam - a State of the people, by the people and for the people, and will forever be a historical milestone.

The room at Thanh Hoa Provincial Museum displays historical artifacts from the period 1945-1975. Images of the first general election in 1946 are still in Mr. Moc's memory.

Mr. Thieu Quang Moc (Chairman of Thanh Hoa Town People's Committee from 1972 to 1984) shared: "In the past, there were no materials like today. We encouraged each other to borrow bamboo and reeds to make welcome gates to hang up, use black charcoal to write on, and wisely choose to elect representative people to the National Assembly. In some places, we wrote "Long live the Democratic Republic of Vietnam".

Nearly 80 years later, the ballot box of the 1946 general election is still preserved. The person who decorated the ballot box was Mr. Le Gia Trinh (leather shoemaker - Pho Lon). The general election day of January 6, 1946 was hand-cut.

Mr. Trinh Dinh Duong (Director of Thanh Hoa Provincial Museum) said: "The material to create this ballot box is very weak, from thin wood. We look at the ballot box from 80 years ago, but it feels like new. This continues to be preserved and kept by Thanh Hoa Provincial Museum for a long time as a national treasure."

On January 5, 1946, the newspaper Cuu Quoc, one day before the first general election, published President Ho Chi Minh 's call for the nation to vote.

Those who witnessed the first general election day, for them are special memories.

"Before, there were propaganda cars to encourage and call on people to go vote the next day. One special thing that I found different from now is that all the red flags with yellow stars, every house hung the red flag with yellow stars. The city celebrated election day," said Mr. Le Duc Van (Hoang Dieu National Salvation Youth Union).

The general election was successful, for the first time Vietnam had a National Assembly, a unified Government, a progressive Constitution and a full-fledged legal government system representing the Vietnamese people in domestic and foreign affairs - a state entrusted by the people with the responsibility of governing the country, organizing the people's resistance war to build the nation, and resolving all of Vietnam's relations in the international arena.
