The unique and magical Avant-Garde Ao Dai by designer Vy Nguyen has created a special mark in the fashion capital of New York, USA.
Designer Vy Nguyen experiments with monochrome black and white when launching the Rivière Noire collection inspired by Hanoi's ao dai in the early 20th century.
The designer experimented with black and white tones but still retained the characteristics of traditional costumes and honored the beauty of women. She made an impression when she first "entered" the New York fashion market with a collection of ao dai with a unique and magical Avant-Garde breath.
The name Rivière Noire (roughly translated: Mysterious River) was inspired by the Hanoi Ao Dai in the early 20th century - the time when the Red River - one of the symbols of the Capital - was also called Rivière Rouge. She brings a combination of the mysterious and the modern, between the traditional features mixed with the strong breath of Avant-Garde. The designs use minimalist colors with delicate, strong cuts.
The designer skillfully highlights the details, sophisticated and eye-catching shapes, especially the way of depicting the water branches - symbolizing the water flow on the Red River. At the same time, the use of black tones not only adds depth and contrast to the design but also brings the mystery and elegance of the mysterious river areas. Overall, it creates a feeling that is both soft, close but also no less individual and different.
Minimalist designs exude elegance and softness, while also bringing mystery and a distinct personality.
Inspired by 'Avant-Garde icon' Yohji Yamamoto, the designer experiments with monochrome to show that black can also be an attention-grabbing focal point, allowing us to focus more on the product itself rather than being distracted by flashy patterns.
At the same time, simplicity and loose-fit are also characteristics of traditional Vietnamese costumes, not too tight but still able to honor the woman's figure with soft curves and hidden charm.
Talking about her first collection, she wanted to dedicate her first project to Vietnam. Even though she has lived and worked in the US for a long time, she still feels strongly attached to her homeland.
The inspiration for these designs came when she looked back at her family photos. Proud of her origins, she wants to promote culture, bring Vietnamese beauty to the Western fashion scene and consolidate Vietnam's position on the world 's high-end fashion map, following in the footsteps of famous Vietnamese names in New York such as Peter Do or GIA studios.
“My favorite design in this collection is definitely the pleated wool blazer with a flattering waist and flared pleats. This is a simple design but still highlights the beauty of Vietnam, combining traditional simplicity and outstanding design to paint a delicate, elegant picture,” the designer confided.
As a Vietnamese designer looking to establish herself in the fashion capital of New York, the young designer is not without its challenges. These range from finance, attracting investment, to intense competition, rapidly changing trends, and networking within the industry for a young designer just starting out. However, the Gen Z girl is still full of confidence: “Dynamics, along with unlimited creativity, will help me come up with new and different ideas. Moreover, consumers are increasingly concerned about sustainability and brand ethics. This is an opportunity for Vy to create a fashion brand that is environmentally and socially conscious,” she shared.
Vy Nguyen's full name is Nguyen Le Thuc Vy, 24 years old, currently living and working in the US. She graduated with a degree in fashion design from the Fashion Institute of Technology - one of the world's top universities for design and fine arts. With experience in internships and support at famous brands such as Dion Lee, Grace Ling and Yeon studio, she is currently working at a large sports fashion company in this city. Coming from a family with a tradition in the Vietnamese fashion industry, at the age of 10, Vy started practicing fashion illustration and developed from there. "My brother was the one who introduced Vy to the Avant-Garde fashion world and from there influenced the way Vy thinks and designs a lot," the young designer shared. Regarding her upcoming plans, she is interested in trends that combine technology and fashion, applying artificial intelligence (AI) to promote and remove limits in the industry. Surely, this will be a notable face of the American - Vietnamese fashion village in the near future.
