Korean pork officially exported to Singapore
As the Hallyu wave continues to spread, not only Korean music and movies but also Korean cuisine are gaining popularity globally, industry sources said on November 6. In this context, “handon” – fresh Korean pork – has just been officially exported to Singapore, opening a new chapter for the country’s pork industry.
According to the Korea Pork Council, the market opening agreement was reached after a meeting between President Lee Jae Myung and Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on November 2, allowing the export of pork produced on Jeju Island. Previously, Singapore only imported processed Korean pork products such as Spam.
Singapore is known for its world-class strict quarantine standards. Jeju received a “foot-and-mouth disease-free” certification from the World Organization for Animal Health in May, becoming the first region in Korea to qualify for exports.
Pork Board representatives said that penetrating the Singapore market – which has high standards for food hygiene – is a testament to the quality and safety of Korean pork. Experts said this is an opportunity to promote the industry from the domestic market to export, taking advantage of the global appeal of Korean cuisine, especially samgyeopsal.
“Handon is becoming a national brand, and we aim to expand the market not only in Asia but around the world,” said Lee Ki-hong, chairman of the Korea Pork Producers Association.
