Cao Bang controls African swine fever, gradually restores livestock farming
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Cao Bang province, to date, the whole province has recorded 177,669 pigs infected with African swine fever that had to be destroyed, accounting for 44% of the total herd, equivalent to more than 8,475 tons of meat. The most serious outbreak occurred from the end of July to the end of August 2025, when more than 107,800 pigs were destroyed. Since the beginning of October, the epidemic situation has clearly decreased, with no new outbreaks.
Currently, 4 communes including Khanh Xuan, Phan Thanh, Phuc Hoa and Nam Quang have declared the epidemic over; 948/1,216 hamlets have gone 21 days without new cases. The provincial agricultural sector is implementing measures to restore production, focusing on vaccination, disinfection and instructing people to switch to raising poultry, waterfowl or fattening cattle to make up for the shortage of pork.
However, epidemic prevention work still faces many difficulties due to the appearance of the recombinant genotype I+II variant, with 43/55 surveillance samples testing positive. The authorities have provided more than 33,000 liters of disinfectant chemicals to localities, while strengthening control over the transportation and trade of breeding pigs and urging vaccination for the second phase in 2025.
As the epidemic has shown signs of abating, some households have begun to restock. This is only allowed after the barns have been disinfected, left empty for at least 30 days, and the origin of the breeding stock is clear. Disease control and monitoring measures continue to be implemented synchronously to restore production, stabilize people's lives, and ensure food safety in the area.
