In April, the domestic market recorded a sharp drop in pepper prices from VND4,000 to VND5,000 per kilogram due to the impact of the new US tax policy. However, the current price level is still about 57 - 59% higher than the same period last year, equivalent to an increase of VND56,500 to VND58,000 per kilogram.
At the International Pepper Day 2025 event held in Jakarta, Mr. Natan Kambuno - representative of the Indonesian Ministry of Trade - presented the strategic development plan for the pepper industry.
The Indonesian government is actively promoting intensive farming, taking advantage of free trade agreements and developing value-added products to increase international competitiveness. However, the pepper industry is facing risks as the US plans to impose new import tariffs on this commodity.
Ms. Firna Azura Ekaputri, Executive Director of IPC for the 2021-2025 term, expressed concern because the US does not produce pepper itself but still imports about 100,000 tons each year, equivalent to 25% of global transactions.
She said that imposing taxes on products that do not directly compete with American farmers is unreasonable, and IPC has officially sent a document requesting the US Government to remove pepper from the list of taxed products.
The new IPC Director for the 2025–2028 term, Ms. Marina Novira Anggraini, called for coordination between the government, associations and farmers to overcome the difficult period and maintain the stability of the industry.
As the host country of the IPC Secretariat, Indonesia plays a central role in promoting cooperation among pepper-growing countries. The IPC currently has seven member countries, accounting for 70% of global pepper production and is a key force in regulating supply and demand in the world market.
