Steel prices on the exchange
Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for December 2025 delivery rose 16 yuan to 2,944 yuan/t.
Iron ore futures fell to their lowest in nearly two months on demand concerns stemming from US President Donald Trump’s plan to double tariffs on imported steel, coupled with weak manufacturing data from top consumer China.
The most-traded September iron ore contract on China’s Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) fell 1.14 percent to 695.5 yuan ($96.69) a tonne. The contract hit its lowest since April 10 at 690.5 yuan.
Benchmark iron ore for July delivery on the Singapore Exchange fell 1.13% to $94.15 a tonne, after hitting its lowest since April 10 at $93.80 a tonne.
On Friday, US President Donald Trump announced plans to double tariffs on imported steel and aluminum to 50%, increasing pressure on global steelmakers and escalating trade tensions.
US steel and aluminum prices rose sharply on Monday, while shares of foreign steelmakers fell sharply. Chinese markets were closed at the start of the week for the Lunar New Year holiday.
Despite a 90-day tariff suspension, the protracted trade war between the world's two largest economies continues to negatively impact China's manufacturing sector, casting a shadow over the outlook for steel consumption.
Manufacturing is now the largest steel consumer in China, surpassing infrastructure and real estate.
China's manufacturing activity shrank for the first time in eight months in May, a private-sector survey showed on Tuesday, following official data showing a second straight month of contraction.
Futures contracts for other steelmaking inputs on the DCE also weakened, with coking coal and coke down 3.03% and 1.1% respectively, hitting their lowest levels in nearly nine years.
