According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association (VPSA), global pepper output is expected to continue to decline in 2025. The main reasons are low economic profits, unfavorable weather and high production costs.
In Vietnam, experts say that if there is no short-term boom in export orders, domestic pepper prices will mainly fluctuate slightly around 154,000 - 157,000 VND/kg before the April 30 holiday.
Besides, logistics costs and exchange rate fluctuations make export enterprises more cautious when signing new contracts.
News of the US imposing reciprocal tariffs caused pepper prices to drop sharply in early April, but prices quickly recovered, helping people feel secure in production.
Although pepper prices are higher this year than last year, the expansion of pepper growing areas is still slow. The reason is that there is not much new land left and farmers prioritize growing crops with higher economic value, so the pepper growing area in 2025 is unlikely to increase significantly.
The International Pepper Community (IPC) forecasts that global production will decrease by 6.1% while demand will continue to increase, helping pepper prices remain high throughout 2025.
In the first quarter of 2025, black pepper prices in many countries recorded a sharp increase compared to the same period in 2024. The main reason came from the decrease in output and increased market demand.
