On January 12, world oil prices continued to increase from the previous 3 sessions. Data from Oilprice showed that at 8:33 p.m. on January 12 (Vietnam time), Brent oil was trading at 79.71 USD/barrel, up 2.3 USD, equivalent to 2.97% compared to the previous session. Meanwhile, WTI oil was at 74.26 USD/barrel, up 2.24 USD, equivalent to 3.11% compared to the previous session.

Oil prices rose as conflict in the Middle East threatened to escalate despite higher-than-expected US inflation.

Oil prices continued to rise as tensions in the Red Sea returned. The US and UK have taken military action against Houthi forces in Yemen following Houthi attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea.

Reuters reported that the US and UK hinted that they would take further measures if the Houthi attacks continued.

Meanwhile, a senior Houthi official said he would soon issue a statement in response.

Iran has seized an Iraqi crude oil tanker bound for Türkiye in retaliation for the US seizure of Iranian oil and ships last year.

The risk of conflict is complicated and this could push oil prices to continue to increase.

From November to December 2023, global trade fell by 1.3% as Houthi attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea led to a decline in the volume of goods transported in the region.

In addition, China's crude oil imports showed more positive signs in December 2023. Data from the General Administration of Customs of China showed that the country imported 48.36 million tons in December 2023, up nearly 14% from 42.45 million tons in November 2023. This information also helped strengthen purchasing power for the oil market.

Domestic gasoline prices

Domestic retail prices of gasoline on January 13 are as follows:

E5 RON 92 gasoline is not more than 21,041 VND/liter.

RON 95-III gasoline is not more than 21,935 VND/liter.

Kerosene not more than 20,331 VND/liter.

The above domestic retail prices of gasoline and oil were adjusted up slightly in the price management session of the Ministry of Finance - Industry and Trade on the afternoon of January 11. Kerosene price increased the most, 374 VND/liter; RON 95-III gasoline price increased the least, 19 VND/liter.

In this operating period, the joint ministries set aside the Price Stabilization Fund for fuel oil at 300 VND/kg, did not set aside the Price Stabilization Fund for gasoline, diesel and kerosene, and did not use the Price Stabilization Fund for all products.
