According to the People's Committee of U Minh Thuong Commune, the locality currently has a centralized water supply station in Chong My Hamlet providing clean water to about 1,257 households. At the same time, the locality is implementing the construction and installation of pipelines with a total length of nearly 66km to bring clean water to 1,682 households. To expand clean water coverage, the local government also coordinated to invest in the construction of two new water supply stations, including: Minh Thuan 2 Water Supply Station and An Minh Bac Water Supply Station.
Ms. Dang Thi Phan, who lives in Cong Su hamlet and is currently using clean water from the centralized water supply system, said: “Previously, my family used water from a drilled well. However, the quality of the water source was not guaranteed, the water was contaminated with alum and salt, so it was only used for bathing and washing, rarely used for cooking or drinking. In the rainy season, we had to collect rainwater to drink, and in the dry season, we had to buy water, so we encountered many difficulties. Since using water from the centralized water supply system, my family has been very excited, using fresh, hygienic water, ensuring daily life and cooking.”

U Minh Thuong is a land famous for its unique Melaleuca forest ecosystem, growing on peat soil and often flooded, contaminated with alum and salt, people have many difficulties in using clean water. Mr. Vo Xuan Truong, residing in Trung Doan hamlet, said that in 1990, people here had many difficulties and shortages of clean water to use. At that time, they only knew how to use river, pond, and lake water for bathing, washing and daily activities. Until 1992, people drilled wells for use, but at that time there were not many, only one well was drilled far away.
Many people had to work hard to row boats to pump fresh water to store in jars and pots, then settle it down for later use. It was not until 2000 that U Minh Thuong began to drill wells, but the water was still contaminated with alum, so people only used it for washing clothes and watering vegetables. Daily drinking and cooking water had to be from rainwater or bottled water. "For the past 2 years, the locality has brought clean water to the countryside, and people are very happy. In the dry season, families no longer worry about the lack of clean water for use and irrigation," said Mr. Truong.
Recognizing the essential role of clean water in life and sustainable development, in recent years, U Minh Thuong has actively implemented many centralized water supply projects, invested in water filtration systems, and expanded the water supply network to remote areas. Thanks to that, the rate of households using clean water is increasing, contributing to improving the quality of life, protecting health and promoting local socio -economic development.
These days, along the roads in U Minh Thuong commune, especially in Trung Doan hamlet, workers are busy transporting and connecting plastic pipes to install clean water pipes for local people's daily life. "People in U Minh Thuong used to use well water, which was not hygienic because some places were contaminated with alum. Since starting to build new rural areas, the locality has had more conditions to invest in bringing clean water to the people. It is expected that by 2030, the commune will have 3 water supply stations to serve people's use, contributing to improving the quality of life," said Chairman of the People's Committee of U Minh Thuong commune, Duong Quoc Khoi.
Clean water is one of the important criteria that U Minh Thuong commune needs to achieve in the process of building new rural areas. Effective implementation of clean water work not only helps improve living conditions but also promotes local socio-economic development.
