According to the Indian Express , the disaster occurred on the afternoon of June 4, when hundreds of thousands of fans flocked to the Chinnaswamy Stadium area (Bengaluru, India) - where the Royal Challengers Bengaluru team was scheduled to celebrate after winning the Punjab Kings in the IPL final.

Although the stadium only has a capacity of about 35,000 people, by the afternoon, it was estimated that more than 250,000 people had gathered around the area.

According to police, at around 3:10 p.m., when the stadium gates were opened, the crowd pushed and shoved many people, leading to chaos and mass casualties.

Hundreds of thousands of people rushed to the site, jostling to get into the yard or climbing over the fences. In the chaos, a makeshift concrete slab near the manhole suddenly collapsed, causing a wave of panic, India Today reported.

The incident left 11 people pushed, trampled and suffocated to death due to lack of oxygen and 47 others injured.

The youngest victim was a 13-year-old girl from Andhra Pradesh state. She and her family had traveled to Bengaluru hoping to catch a glimpse of their idol Virat Kohli, but unfortunately died of asphyxiation and head injuries.

“About 600 to 700 people, mostly women, simultaneously pushed down the gate and rushed inside. The police tried to stop them but were completely helpless. I wanted to help someone, but I myself was stuck in the sea of people, an eyewitness told PTI.

The minutes of the event show that the organisers, comprising RCB, event organisers DNA and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), held the celebrations without taking necessary safety measures.

According to the investigation records, the KSCA was denied permission to hold the celebration. However, these units still brazenly carried out the event and continuously encouraged people to attend by posting on social media and announcing free tickets at the stadium gate.

Police said forces were mobilized, with 1,318 officers and 325 reserve police, along with support vehicles such as ambulances, fire trucks, water trucks, etc. However, with such a large number of people, these efforts were not enough.

In response to public outrage, on June 5, the Chief Minister of Karnataka announced a series of drastic measures by suspending many senior officers.

To clarify the cause and responsibility, the state government has set up an independent judicial commission headed by a former state Supreme Court judge to investigate lapses in planning, coordination and crowd control.

At the same time, Cubbon Park Police Station has filed a case and prosecuted the event organizers under a series of provisions in the new National Penal Code (BNS), including: Murder by negligence, intentional infliction of injury, organizing illegal gatherings, assaulting public officials and endangering the lives of others.
