TBR97 rice variety "found its place" in new land

In agricultural production, varieties are considered one of the key factors to improve productivity, quality and economic efficiency for farmers. This is more meaningful in the context of production under increasingly complex climate change conditions.

One of the current requirements is to apply scientific advances to agricultural production, select new rice varieties with good quality, meeting the requirements for planting. At the same time, create a basis to gradually replace old, long-standing rice varieties that are showing many signs of degeneration and low efficiency.

In the 2022-2023 winter-spring crop, Phu Nam Agricultural Cooperative in collaboration with ThaiBinh Seed Group Joint Stock Company - North Central branch, will transfer to farmers the pure quality rice variety TBR97, planted on a scale of 1ha. This demonstration model serves as a basis for assessing the adaptability of the variety for mass planting in the following years in the province.

Mr. Le Loc in Thuy Chau ward, one of the farmers participating in the model, is very satisfied and highly appreciates the effectiveness of the TBR97 rice variety. Although this rice variety is new and first time being planted in the ward, people still apply traditional farming practices, combining with adjusting the care process, fertilizing, and pest control according to the guidance of the staff to help the rice grow and develop well. With this farming method, farmers can easily apply when introducing the new rice variety into mass production.

Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Nguyen Long An, said that testing new, high-quality rice varieties is a regular activity of the agricultural sector. The sector always creates the best conditions for units, businesses, and departments to test new rice varieties in the province to gradually replace low-efficiency varieties. In the near future, the agricultural sector will expand the testing area of the TBR97 rice variety in the upcoming summer-autumn crop.

According to the assessment of the Board of Directors of Phu Nam Agricultural Cooperative, the TBR97 variety has good agronomic indicators such as beautiful shape, upright leaves, strong functional leaves, compact roots, good neck drainage, and high field purity. This new variety has an average plant height and is hardy. At the end of April, despite the impact of storms, the rice still did not fall over...

The growth period of TBR97 is about 115 days, equivalent to the short-term rice varieties in Huong Thuy town such as Khang Dan 18... which are being widely planted. The length of the panicle is average, but there are many grains, and the grains overlap. Although the flowering time is unfavorable, the percentage of solid grains is high. The care and growth process shows that this rice variety has a very good resistance to pests and diseases, and has not seen the appearance of rice blast disease, as well as bacterial diseases and other harmful planthoppers. During the growth process, no pesticides have been sprayed to prevent any harmful objects.

The average yield of TBR97 rice variety is about 7 tons/ha, 5 tons/ha higher than the control rice variety model. Under good care and intensive farming conditions, this rice variety can reach a yield of 75-8 tons/ha. On average, each hectare of TBR97 rice yields more than 29 million VND, compared to Khang Dan 18 which only yields 24.5 million VND.

Mr. Bui Quang Tuan, Director of ThaiBinh Seed Group Joint Stock Company, North Central Branch, informed that the unit will continue to expand many experimental production sites in many ecological regions in the following crops to have more accurate assessment results. Huong Thuy town, the provincial agricultural sector needs to put pure rice variety TBR97 into the group of promising short-term varieties; at the same time, create conditions for replicating the model on the basis of arranging in the land planned for winter-spring crop production, flood-prone areas in the summer-autumn crop in the town and the whole province.
