Google announced plans on October 27 to restart a nuclear power plant in Iowa, the US, to boost energy supplies for the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. The move marks the latest collaboration between the tech giants and the US energy industry.
Specifically, the Duane Arnold Energy Center of the electric company NextEra Energy, which has been shut down since 2020, is expected to be operational again in 2029 to provide energy for Google's cloud computing system and AI infrastructure in Iowa (USA). Accordingly, Google has signed a 25-year power purchase agreement with this center after the restart process.
NextEra will take full ownership of the Duane Arnold Energy Center after the company reached an agreement to buy out all of the minority shareholders.
In the group's press release, Google stated that in the context of the US entering a new era of innovation and opportunity thanks to the explosion of AI, this strategic cooperation project will help Google orient its business needs in line with responsibility. The technology group also emphasized the advantage of nuclear power as a carbon-free energy source.
Previously, Google announced a series of initiatives to ensure future electricity supply capacity, including a plan to cooperate with Elementl Power to develop three advanced nuclear power plants in the US.
In another development, Constellation Power Company has promoted the project to restart the Three Mile Island plant, which was closed in 2019 in Pennsylvania (USA), after signing an agreement to supply electricity to software company Microsoft for 20 years.
According to a forecast in April by the International Energy Agency (IEA), the amount of electricity consumed by data centers globally will more than double by 2030./.
