According to the Financial Times , an increasing number of businesses worldwide are facing the problem of employees exploiting artificial intelligence (AI) to create fake invoices and fraudulently claim payment.
In recent months, major tech companies like OpenAI and Google have launched next-generation AI image generation models, leading to a surge in fake invoices generated using this technology.
According to cybersecurity company AppZen, 14% of fraudulent documents detected in September were fake invoices generated by AI, compared to zero in the same period last year.
Meanwhile, Fintech company Lamps revealed that its new software detected fraudulent refund requests totaling over $1 million in just 90 days.
Cybersecurity experts believe that after OpenAI launched its upgraded GPT-40 version in March, the number of AI-generated fake invoices increased sharply.
The Maeil Business Newspaper, citing a Financial Times commentary, reported that these invoices were almost indistinguishable from the real ones – from the creases in the paper and the signatures to the details of the items and the restaurant logo.
Previously, forging invoices often required using paid photo editing services or hiring online document forgery services. Today, with just a few lines of description, AI can create a fake invoice in seconds.
In response to this situation, many businesses have deployed AI-based security management software to detect sophisticated fake invoices that are difficult for humans to identify.
These systems can scan and analyze invoice images, check metadata, trace storage servers, determine when images were taken, or cross-reference employee travel information to detect signs of fraud.
Experts warn that the rapid development of AI is making financial fraud increasingly sophisticated and difficult to control. If businesses do not invest in modern fraud detection technology, they could suffer significant financial losses and reputational risks in internal management.
