According to the Financial Times , more and more businesses around the world are facing a situation where employees are taking advantage of artificial intelligence (AI) to create fake invoices and fraudulently pay expenses.
In recent months, major tech companies like OpenAI and Google have launched new generation AI image generation models, leading to a surge in fake invoices created using this technology.
Information security firm AppZen said 14% of fraudulent documents it detected in September were fake invoices generated by AI, compared to zero in the same period last year.
Meanwhile, Fintech company Lamps revealed that its new software detected more than $1 million in fraudulent refund requests in just 90 days.
Cybersecurity experts say that after OpenAI launched the upgraded version of GPT-4o in March, the number of fake invoices created using AI increased sharply.
Maeil Business Newspaper quoted a comment from Financial Times saying that these invoices are almost indistinguishable from the real thing - from the folds on the paper, the signature, to every detail of the item or the restaurant logo.
In the past, counterfeiting invoices often required using paid photo editing services or hiring online document counterfeiting agencies. Today, with just a few lines of description, AI can create a fake invoice in seconds.
Faced with this situation, many businesses have deployed AI-based security management software to detect sophisticated fake invoices that are difficult for humans to detect.
These systems can scan and analyze invoice images, check metadata, trace storage servers, determine when photos were taken, or compare employee travel information to detect signs of fraud.
Experts warn that the rapid development of AI is making financial fraud more sophisticated and difficult to control. If businesses do not invest in modern fraud detection technology, they may suffer huge financial losses and reputational risks in internal management.
