Carrying hope on my back, I take you to school

How to make sure students attend class regularly is always a concern for teachers working in difficult areas, especially remote villages in border areas - where ethnic minorities live.

Most of the people here do not pay much attention to their children's education, because for them "it is difficult to earn enough to eat, let alone learn to read and write". Children who have been working in the fields since they were young often avoid going to class to meet their teachers and friends. Therefore, the story of teachers going to the village to "arrest" students has become familiar to teachers every new school year.

In the mountainous districts of Huong Hoa and Dakrong in Quang Tri province, every new school year, teachers at schools with many Van Kieu and Pa Co ethnic minority students have to go to the villages to "catch" the students to come to class.

At 3:30 p.m., after cleaning the classroom, teacher Hoang Duong Hoa - homeroom teacher of class 6A2, A Ngo Primary and Secondary School (Huong Hoa, Quang Tri) drove his old motorbike into the village. After 12km of mountain road, teacher Hoa found a small house in La Lay village, where Ngon - a student who had not been to class for 4 days - was living.

Through investigation, Mr. Hoa learned that Ngon could not go to class because his family was very poor and he did not have a bicycle to go to school. Understanding his feelings, Mr. Hoa told Ngon that he could ask for a bicycle from his elders in the same village to go to school, and discussed with Ngon's father that he could ask for him to stay at a relative's house near the school to make it easier for him to go to school. Mr. Hoa also promised that when the teachers mobilized the gifts, they would give priority to Ngon.

Mr. Hoa’s trip was fruitful. The very next day, Ngon went to school to rehearse for the new school year, although he was still later than his classmates. The times of going to the village to “catch” students will certainly continue, but the joy of seeing the class full will be the motivation for Mr. Hoa to try harder.
