Recently, Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Duong Duc Tuan signed Decision No. 4602/QD-UBND on approving the route plan and location of urban railway line No. 5, Van Cao - Ngoc Khanh - Lang - Hoa Lac section. The plan was prepared by Hanoi Institute of Construction Planning in 2025, appraised by the Department of Planning and Architecture, scale 1/500.
According to the decision, line 5 starts at the Van Cao - Hoang Hoa Tham intersection, passes through central wards such as Ngoc Ha, Giang Vo, Lang, Yen Hoa, then follows Thang Long avenue and ends at Thach Binh station (Hoa Lac).
The total length of the main route is about 39.6 km, in addition there are two branches connecting to Depot No. 1 (Son Dong commune, Duong Hoa) and Depot No. 2 (Hoa Lac commune), with a total length of about 4.8 km.

The entire line consists of 20 stations, including 6 underground stations, 3 elevated stations and 11 ground stations. The stations are mainly located along Thang Long Avenue and Hoa Lac - Hoa Binh Expressway. Notably, many stations have direct connections with other urban railway lines such as No. 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and Monorail M2, contributing to the formation of a complete public transport network.
According to the design, urban railway line No. 5 has a mixed structure: the underground section extends from Van Cao through Lieu Giai, Nguyen Chi Thanh to Tran Duy Hung; the ground and elevated sections start from behind the National Convention Center, continue along Thang Long Avenue and end at Hoa Lac.
The project has two main Depot areas. Depot 1 has an area of 32 hectares, located in Son Dong - Duong Hoa commune, serving Line 5 and Line 8 (Son Dong - Duong Xa), and also integrates a railway vehicle assembly workshop. Depot 2 has an area of 10.4 hectares, located in the Hoa Lac urban planning area, playing the role of a vehicle maintenance center when the line is put into operation.
The Hanoi People's Committee assigned the Department of Planning and Architecture to check and confirm the drawings; the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board presides over the announcement of the planning and organizes the placement of boundary markers in the field. The People's Committees of districts and towns where the route passes through are responsible for managing boundary markers and land according to the planning, and at the same time coordinate to resolve issues related to site clearance.
Line 5 will become the axis connecting the central area with the western area and the satellite urban area of Hoa Lac, creating conditions to reduce pressure on existing routes, especially Thang Long Avenue, which is often overloaded.
In addition, the line also connects directly with many other metro lines, contributing to the formation of a large, synchronous and modern mass transport network. This is also an important preparation step for Hanoi to achieve the goal of developing sustainable transport, reducing personal vehicles and improving the quality of the urban environment.
According to traffic experts, when completed, Line 5 will contribute significantly to reducing traffic congestion and creating momentum for socio -economic development in areas along the route, especially the Hoa Lac high-tech park and western satellite cities.
Metro stations on the route are expected to become the nucleus to promote the formation of service, commercial, housing and synchronous infrastructure centers, thereby accelerating the urbanization process in a modern and sustainable direction.
