Hamas is an ally of the Hezbollah armed group in Lebanon, which has deployed forces in the south of the country and repeatedly attacked northern Israel.
After Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, escalating the conflict around the Gaza Strip, the situation on the Israel-Lebanon border has become increasingly tense. Tit-for-tat raids across the border have left nearly 90 people dead on both sides.
More than 1,200 people were killed in Lebanon, mostly civilians, in the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah. Israel recorded about 160 deaths, mostly its soldiers.
