In recent years, humanoid robots have been widely used in many fields, from sports to other complex activities, and some models are even sold at super cheap prices, to serve the purpose of customers who want to experience this service.
According to Interesting Engineering , the humanoid robot named “R1” developed by Unitree Robots in Hangzhou (China) has attracted attention with its surprising starting price of 39,999 yuan (about 5,570 USD ).
According to the manufacturer, the R1 Robot is programmable and designed with agility in mind. It has 26 joints and is widely advertised for its ability to handle the demands of sports and other complex tasks. Priced at under $6,000 , the R1 is considered a worthy choice in the robot market.
More notably, this price is significantly lower than Unitree's other robot models. Specifically, the G1 model starts at around $13,700 , and the company's top-of-the-line model, the H1, costs up to nearly $90,000 . This suggests that the R1 may be a cost-optimized version, with certain cuts in features or materials to achieve the unimaginable price.

This is also the main purpose of the R1. The product is positioned as a solution for small-scale developers who want to research with humanoid robots. Weighing less than 25 kg, the R1 is designed to be easier to handle than many other heavy robots.
The idea behind the R1 is to give research or development teams with limited resources the opportunity to experiment and program with a humanoid robotic device at low cost.
However, the R1’s seemingly unbelievable price tag of under $6,000 has raised concerns among the public. Many believe that the robot may not live up to expectations, and may even pose a risk of causing waste and inconvenience to users.
Unitree's promotional video showcases the robot's impressive capabilities, including intricate acrobatic moves that are typically thought to be performed only by high-end robots. However, it's the images in the video that make viewers start to recognize the familiarity of the R1 robot.
Several videos of humanoid robots behaving erratically have gone viral, and the R1 robot seems to be at the center of them. One notable video shows a robot fighting with a crowd in China.
Although this robot wears a uniform that makes identification a bit difficult, its overall shape and head design have many similarities to the R1.
It’s worth noting that the robots featured in the videos could be early prototypes or completely different, but considering a programmable robot costs less than $6,000 , it’s hard to expect a high-end humanoid robot.
