During the 1970s amid the Cold War, he was involved in many significant global events while serving as national security advisor and Secretary of State under Republican President Richard Nixon, including the restoration of diplomatic relations between the United States and China, landmark arms control negotiations between the United States and the Soviet Union, the expansion of relations between Israel and its Arab neighbors, and his contribution to the signing of the Paris Peace Accords in Vietnam.

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973 for this success - jointly with the late Vietnamese diplomat Le Duc Tho.

Mr. Kissinger was a Jewish immigrant from Germany who became a U.S. citizen in 1943, served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II, and attended Harvard University on a scholarship.

In 1973, in addition to his role as national security advisor, Mr. Kissinger was also appointed US Secretary of State - giving him great power in foreign affairs.

Former US Ambassador to China Winston Lord, who served as special assistant to Kissinger, said he was a "tireless advocate for peace... America has lost a great champion of the national interest".
