In Chieng Lao commune, aquaculture activities are quite developed. The commune has over 200 fish cages of various types, with an output of about 120 tons/year. Mr. Luong Van Oan, Nhap village, Chieng Lao commune, registered to participate in the project. Mr. Oan shared: My family and the people in the commune mainly consume fish directly to local people and traders, but it is not stable. I registered to participate in the project with the hope that the fish processing model will be successful, helping to stably consume the local fresh fish output.
Participating in the project, Mr. Oan's family committed to complying with the technical process of safe fish processing, having an aquaculture area, ensuring a stable source of raw materials for processing, and having counterpart capital according to the project's regulations. His family was equipped with equipment such as: scaler, bone separator, grinder, steamer, industrial fryer, copper pellet mill, vacuum and industrial packaging machine. At the same time, he participated in training courses on fish farming techniques according to VietGAP standards.
Production activities have been running since the end of 2024, each month Mr. Oan's family supplies 500 kg of fish cakes to food stores in the area. With a selling price ranging from 100,000-150,000 VND/kg, his family has a stable income of over 50 million VND/month, creating stable jobs for 2 family workers, with an income of 3-4 million VND/person/month.
Talking about the model's future development plan, Mr. Oan said: The family is listening to customer feedback to perfect the fish cake recipe, while actively searching for, expanding the market and increasing processing capacity to meet the diverse needs of consumers. This year, we are developing the market to provide a stable source of processed food for neighboring localities in the district.
Mr. Bac Cam Khuyen, Vice Chairman of the Provincial Farmers' Association, commented: The project "Building a seafood processing model on the Son La hydroelectric reservoir" has been implemented, initially providing effective machinery and techniques to members, creating safe fish cakes. Currently, the project has great potential in enhancing the value of the seafood industry and is in line with the local development orientation.
With abundant available seafood resources, it is completely possible to meet the operating capacity of the modern processing machinery system that the project has equipped for members. However, to achieve the goal of producing 1 ton of fish cakes/day, members need to build a brand and expand the consumption market. At the same time, deploy solutions to preserve and transport processed products effectively; encourage production and consumption linkages between households, ensuring the sustainable development of the model.
The seafood processing model on the Son La hydroelectric reservoir contributes to improving the competitiveness of products and bringing sustainable livelihoods to people. Therefore, the locality needs to pay attention to supporting brand building, product promotion, diversifying distribution channels and strengthening regional linkages, aiming to increase capacity and build a sustainable value chain for the entire seafood industry.
