Brendan Rodgers, 52, previously managed Liverpool (2012–2015) and Leicester City (2019–2023), where he won the FA Cup in 2021. |
The decision comes just a day after Celtic's shock 3-1 defeat to league leaders Hearts in round 9, leaving the reigning Scottish Premiership champions eight points behind in the title race.
In a statement on its website, Celtic said: "Celtic Football Club can confirm that manager Brendan Rodgers has submitted his resignation. The resignation has been accepted by the club and Brendan will leave his position with immediate effect."
"The club acknowledges Brendan's contributions during two very successful periods at Celtic. We thank Brendan for his role at the club and wish him success in the future," Celtic's website continued.
In the interim, manager Martin O'Neill and former Celtic player Shaun Maloney will take over first-team management.
This is Brendan Rodgers' second spell at Celtic. His first spell (2016–2019) saw him win two domestic trebles (Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup, and League Cup). After returning in June 2023 to replace Ange Postecoglou, Rodgers went on to help Celtic win two more Premiership titles, including a fourth consecutive title last season.
However, the 2025/26 season has started poorly for Celtic, who were knocked out of the Champions League play-offs and are currently second in the Premiership, eight points behind Hearts after nine games. Fans have been protesting, even throwing tennis balls onto the pitch during a game against Dundee earlier this month, expressing their dissatisfaction with the limited summer signings and failure to qualify for the Champions League.
