This is the first time the winner of the most prestigious crown in the Miss Japan pageant has given up her title. The pageant's organizers said the position will be left vacant this year, according to The Japan Times .
Karolina Shiino, 26, was crowned in the contest held on January 22. She is the first person of European descent to win the top prize at Miss Japan, a contest that organizers say aims to find someone who represents "the ultimate beauty of all Japanese women," according to Kyodo news agency.

Shiino, whose parents are Ukrainian, was also born in the European country. Her parents divorced and her mother later married a Japanese man. She grew up in Japan after moving to the city of Nagoya at the age of 5. In September 2023, she revealed that she had become a naturalized Japanese citizen.
Ms. Shiino's becoming Miss Japan has caused fierce controversy among the public in this country.

The controversy escalated after Shukan Bunshun magazine reported on January 31 that Ms. Shiino was dating a married male doctor. However, the Miss Japan organizers denied the information on February 1, saying that the doctor claimed to be single and Ms. Shiino did not know that he was married.
"The Miss Japan Association believes that Ms. Karolina Shiino did nothing wrong," the organization said on February 1.
But the association issued a new statement on February 5 saying that Ms. Shiino had dated the doctor despite knowing he was married and that she had apologized for lying about it. The association accepted Ms. Shiino’s request to give up her title.
In an apology posted to her Instagram, Ms Shiino said she had been unable to speak out because of embarrassment and fear after the article appeared. "I am truly sorry for the huge trouble I have caused and for betraying those who supported me," she wrote.
