(Chinhphu.vn) - Vietnam welcomes Timor Leste to become an official member of ASEAN and believes that Timor Leste will actively contribute to the common efforts to build a self-reliant, innovative and people-centered ASEAN Community.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang: Vietnam welcomes Timor Leste to become an official member of ASEAN

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang emphasized this at the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs held on the afternoon of October 16 in Hanoi .

The Spokesperson said that at the 46th ASEAN Summit in May, ASEAN decided to admit Timor Leste as the 11th official member of ASEAN. The admission ceremony is expected to take place at the 47th ASEAN Summit held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on October 26.

Regarding the information on October 14, the Malaysian Foreign Minister said that US President Donald Trump will attend the 47th ASEAN Summit and hopes to witness the signing ceremony of the ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said:

Vietnam welcomes and appreciates the mediation efforts of countries, especially Malaysia in its role as ASEAN Chair in 2025, and relevant parties, along with the active cooperation of both Thailand and Cambodia in promoting the peaceful settlement of disagreements on the basis of fundamental principles of international law, the United Nations Charter, the ASEAN Charter, the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), and in the spirit of ASEAN friendship and solidarity, for the benefit of both Thailand and Cambodia and for peace and stability in the region and the world./.
