US suspends trade negotiations with Thailand
This information was given by Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Nikorndej Balankura after the country received a notification from the Deputy US Trade Representative in Thailand. According to Mr. Nikorndej, the US side stated that the exchanges will only be resumed after Thailand commits to complying with the Joint Statement signed with Cambodia. The two sides need to negotiate and complete the details of the agreement before signing it to take effect.
The letter comes after the US and Thailand announced a bilateral trade framework last month, under which the US will maintain a 19% tariff on Thai products while identifying products that can be adjusted or reduced to zero.
A spokesman for the Thai Foreign Ministry expressed disappointment with Washington's stance and stressed that security and safety issues, especially bilateral issues between Thailand and Cambodia, should be separated from trade issues, which benefit both Thailand and the US.
