Businesses join in, farmers benefit from low-carbon rice chain
Speaking with the Government Electronic Newspaper, Associate Professor Dr. Bui Ba Bong, Chairman of the Vietnam Rice Industry Association (VIETRISA), said that in October and early November 2025, VIETRISA granted the Certificate of Right to Use the "Low Emission Green Vietnamese Rice" trademark to 6 enterprises, including: VINARICE, Chon Chinh, A An, Trung An, Agrimex-Kikoku (AKJ) and King Green, with a total of 52,220 tons of rice, produced from 12,455 hectares of rice.
The highlight of the amount of rice granted the label is the detailed traceability of its origin: production location, rice variety, production season, applied technical process. This entire process is monitored by the Rice Value Chain Transformation Project to Respond to Climate Change and Sustainable Development (TRVC).
The amount of greenhouse gas emissions from rice production carried out by the above enterprises in association with farmers or cooperatives has been independently verified by the international organization Regrow, recording a reduction of 3.14 to 4.63 tons of CO₂ equivalent/ha. This figure shows that the synchronous application of advanced farming techniques, fertilizer use, irrigation water, straw management, etc. has brought about clear environmental efficiency, while creating added value for rice grains.
The rice varieties that are granted the trademark focus on high-quality rice, including OM18, Dai Thom 8, DS1 (japonica rice), ST25 and especially Japanese rice varieties such as Hana, Akita and Koshi produced by Angimex-Kitoku Company. The participation of specialty rice varieties and imported rice shows the trend of diversifying raw material sources, aiming at the high-end market segment.
Previously, in April 2025, VIETRISA first granted the “Green Vietnamese Rice, Low Emissions” trademark certificate to 7 enterprises with a total volume of 19,200 tons of rice, of which Trung An High-Tech Agriculture Company exported 500 tons to Japan. The ceremony to export the first batch of “Green Vietnamese Rice, Low Emissions” from Vietnam to Japan was held in Can Tho on June 5, 2025, marking a symbolic step in the journey to bring Vietnamese low-carbon rice to the demanding market.
To date, with the cooperation of TRVC, VIETRISA has granted the “Green Vietnamese Rice, Low Emissions” label to a total quantity of over 70,000 tons. Vietnam is therefore known as the first country in the world to produce low-carbon (low-emission) rice in large quantities and the first country to export low-carbon rice.

Statistics on area and output of "Green Vietnamese Rice, Low Emissions" brand in the Mekong Delta
Closely follow the Project of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice
Enterprises certified to use the “Green Vietnamese Rice, Low Emissions” label are all units participating in the TRVC Project sponsored by the Australian Embassy in Vietnam and the Netherlands Development Organization (SNV), in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Department of Agriculture and Environment implemented in the two provinces of An Giang and Dong Thap in the period 2023-2027.
The TRVC project aims to accumulate an area of 200,000 hectares with the participation of 200,000 farming households; the cumulative emission reduction is 200,000 tons CO₂ equivalent or more. These figures show the scale and ambition of the project, not just at the pilot level but towards a model of sustainable rice production on a large scale in the Mekong Delta.
The project is implemented in line with the orientation of the Project "Sustainable development of one million hectares of high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030", approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 1490/QD-TTg dated November 27, 2023. The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment is the implementing agency, in which the formation and development of the "Low-emission Vietnamese Green Rice" brand is an important component, creating a market identification tool for products that meet low-carbon standards.
The fact that more than 70,000 tons of rice have been granted the “Low-Emission Green Vietnamese Rice” label in a short period of time shows the strong participation of businesses and farmers in implementing rice production according to new standards. This is not only a story of reducing emissions and responding to climate change, but also a strategic direction for Vietnamese rice to improve its competitiveness and access markets that require high environmental standards and sustainable development.
