Thailand to collect customs duties on cheap imports
Thailand will start collecting a 10% customs duty on cheap imported goods from early next year to protect domestic small and medium-sized enterprises, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nithanprapas said on November 14.
Thailand currently exempts import duties on goods valued at 1,500 baht ($46.40) or less. However, cheap goods, mainly imported from China, are blamed for disrupting domestic production and business, contributing to a series of factory closures and job losses in Thailand, prompting calls from businesses for government action.
Mr. Ekniti said the new measure, which will take effect from January 1, 2026, will support Thailand’s manufacturing industry. The government is also seeking cooperation from online trading platform operators to help collect taxes.
The move would impact the e-commerce, logistics and retail sectors, and place an additional burden on carriers handling millions of untaxed parcels, according to law firm Tilleke & Gibbins.
