The Japanese royal family posts photos of official activities on Instagram instead of just publishing them on the website as before, hoping to attract attention from the younger generation.
On April 1, the Imperial Household Agency (IHA) launched an Instagram account named kunaicho_jp, with the first 19 posts compiling photos and videos of recent events attended by Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako.
The account was created last week, but was set to private and only made public on April 1. It currently has more than 190,000 followers and has not yet enabled comments.

While royal families in other countries frequently use social media, the Japanese royal family is traditionally secretive and previously only published announcements and photos on its official website.
An IHA spokesman hopes that through the new approach, the agency will attract the younger generation's interest in royal activities.
"IHA appeared on Instagram! I thought it was an April Fool's joke," commented one social media account.
The kunaicho_jp account is not currently following anyone, but IHA said it may consider proposals from other royal families to link up on social media.
