My Uyen, a student at Marie Curie High School (Xuan Hoa Ward, Ho Chi Minh City), who has just taken the 2025 high school graduation exam, said that the exam questions for compulsory subjects such as math, literature, and elective subjects (such as geography and English) all emphasize thinking. Therefore, no matter what subjects candidates will take in the upcoming graduation exam, they need to practice thinking and practical questions, not just focus on theory.

According to My Uyen, to learn to think well, students need to improve their self-study ability. This will create for students the habit of thinking independently and coming up with their own answers, instead of having to follow certain steps as taught.

"For example, looking at the recent high school graduation math exam, there are many practical types of questions, so students need to study and spend more time practicing these types of questions. With English, in addition to learning vocabulary and practicing questions, students need many environments such as books, newspapers, movies, articles on social networks... to see English as familiar. In addition, with social science subjects such as literature and geography, students should regularly follow the news, read books and newspapers, and grasp information to practice thinking and reasoning," My Uyen added.

Need to change teaching and learning methods to adapt to exam reform

Kiet Luan, a student of the Natural Science class at the High School for the Gifted (Ho Chi Minh City National University), who just took the high school graduation exam with two elective subjects: chemistry and biology, said that this year's exam questions in all four compulsory and elective subjects were "all interesting and unique". Luan commented: "These questions require understanding the nature to be able to do them. For biology, it is not purely about mechanical calculations".

Kiet Luan said that looking at the way high school graduation exams are made, students need to change their learning methods in all subjects, apply thinking methods, and do many practical exercises to be able to do well in all subjects.

Having just passed the first choice of grade 10 to enter a school in the top 10 schools with the highest admission scores in the new Ho Chi Minh City, NLCat Tien has been closely following the 2025 high school graduation exam, paying special attention to the math, literature, and English exam questions.

"Looking at your exam questions, I think that high school students need to change the way they study literature, focus on studying for real, recognizing the true nature and accumulating more life experience, not just copying sample essays to cope - the way many students do today. For English, I think that students today need to have a clear review schedule, grasp the type of questions 3-4 months before the exam, and avoid being subjective like every year. For math, students need to practice many different types of questions and learn how to reason, not overuse artificial intelligence (AI) in the process of solving problems so that they can easily apply them to many different types flexibly," said NLCat Tien.

With the way the Ministry of Education and Training creates high school graduation exams from 2025, students will change their learning methods and also expect teachers to change their teaching methods.

I wish teachers would focus more on teaching than on giving homework.

Thuy Tien, a high school student in Ben Thanh Ward (HCMC), will take the high school graduation exam in 2026. According to Tien, the literature exam is very good, closely following current events, and at the same time allowing students to express their feelings and thoughts without being limited to sample essays or familiar literature. As for the math and English exams, this student feels worried because the exams are more difficult than in previous years, especially the English exam.

"With the way the Ministry of Education and Training has set high school graduation exam questions from 2025, students will change their learning methods, and I also hope that teachers will change their teaching methods. I hope that teachers will not put too much emphasis on preparing accurate essays at home, avoiding students copying sample essays. Instead, they can ask students to read in advance and prepare questions to discuss with teachers and students in class the next day," Thuy Tien said.

"I think, for math, literature or English, in a class, teachers should focus more on lecturing than giving students exercises. Because only when students understand the essence, can they do the exercises more easily. Especially, for English, we hope teachers will review each unit of knowledge such as how to divide word classes, how to do different types of exercises... Teachers need to teach students about test-taking skills as well as knowledge in class, instead of just letting them learn grammar and vocabulary separately and separately in textbooks," Thuy Tien added.

In addition, Thuy Tien hopes that teachers and schools will organize more mock high school graduation exams with real time so that students can get used to the feeling of taking the real exam and avoid pressure. "At the same time, for literature, teachers need to organize more in-class lessons for students to write their own essays - so that they can get used to writing a 4-point essay, maximum 600 words like in the high school graduation exam - because this is the part that students are most likely to neglect in all subjects", Thuy Tien suggested.
