Since May 2023, more than 1,200 children have died in refugee camps in Sudan, while thousands more newborns are at risk of falling into a similar situation by the end of the year due to health care problems in this conflict-ridden country.

According to VNA correspondent in Geneva, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on September 18 released the above report to warn about the consequences of the crisis in Sudan on the issue of child health care.

The UNHCR report said the deaths of these children were all under 5 years old, recorded in 9 refugee camps mainly housing refugees from South Sudan and Ethiopia.

Also during the period from May 15 to September 14, UNHCR recorded another 3,100 suspected cases of measles, more than 500 cases of diarrhea, while dengue fever and malaria outbreaks have also become another concern.

UNICEF spokesman James Elder said that 330,000 babies are expected to be born in the last three months of 2023, and worryingly, there will also be a serious shortage of nutrition services during this time.

According to Mr Elder, every month about 55,000 children need treatment for the most severe form of malnutrition in Sudan, but in the capital Khartoum, the ratio of nutrition centers is less than 1 in 50, while the ratio in the West Darfur region is 1 in 10.

UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi stressed that the world has the means and the finances to prevent deaths from measles or malnutrition, but above all, it needs to end conflicts to ensure people have access to basic care.

UNICEF also noted in particular the lack of funding to implement support programmes in Sudan.

The agency said it had received only a quarter of the $838 million (€784 million) it requested to help 10 million children in Sudan, meaning the less funding it receives, the more children will die./.
