More than 150 farmers and delegates from ASEAN countries visited the circular economic model from straw at Tien Thuan Cooperative

(CTO) - On November 20, the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection under the Department of Agriculture and Environment (DARD) of Can Tho City coordinated with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) to organize a demonstration and introduction of straw processing machines and technologies and create conditions for farmers and related parties to visit the actual circular economic model from straw at Tien Thuan Agricultural and Service Cooperative (HTX) in Thanh Quoi commune, Can Tho City.

The event attracted the participation of more than 150 farmers and delegates from 5 ASEAN countries: Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia.

Delegates watched a demonstration of machinery and technology for producing straw pots.

Farmers and delegates including agricultural extension officers, businesses, representatives of cooperatives, state management agencies, international organizations, etc. visited the fields and witnessed the demonstration of straw processing machines and technologies and the management and use of straw according to the circular economy at Tien Thuan Cooperative.

Specifically, see the demonstration of straw tilling machine combined with spraying biological products to treat straw in the field, demonstration of applying machinery in producing organic fertilizer from straw, demonstration of technology of pressing organic fertilizer pellets from straw, technology of producing straw pots to replace plastic pots for growing and displaying ornamental flowers. On this occasion, Tien Thuan Cooperative and experts from IRRI and related institutes, schools, businesses and units also shared experiences and techniques in straw processing, exchanged and answered questions from delegates. At the same time, discussed and proposed solutions to strengthen links and cooperation to promote the development of circular economic models from straw and improve efficiency in management and use of straw in a sustainable direction, increasing the rice value chain associated with reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

With the support of the Can Tho City Department of Agriculture and the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, IRRI, and related units, in recent times, farmers at Tien Thuan Cooperative have had the opportunity to increase production efficiency and income by participating in the implementation of a high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation model, while making good use of straw by-products to develop a circular economic model. The Cooperative has been supported to access and apply many types of modern machinery to collect and process straw in a circular manner. Straw is used to grow straw mushrooms and the waste straw substrate continues to be reused as organic fertilizer.
