Closing of the new Phong Chau bridge on National Highway 32C

On August 27, the Ministry of Construction, the Ministry of National Defense and Phu Tho province held a ceremony to close the new Phong Chau bridge on National Highway 32C across the Red River, connecting Phung Nguyen commune and Van Xuan commune, Phu Tho province.

Preparations for Phong Chau bridge closing

During the 7 months of implementation, the new Phong Chau bridge construction site always had about 250 workers working continuously in "3 shifts, 4 shifts". Especially, in the final stage, the contractors mobilized many modern equipment and machines to construct with high intensity.

The project is expected to be completed and put into operation in October 2025, 2 months earlier than the original plan. The early completion of the new Phong Chau bridge is of particular importance, not only to overcome the old bridge collapse but also to open up new development momentum for the area.

The bridge will shorten travel time on National Highway 32C, enhance connectivity between communes and wards in the west of Phu Tho province, facilitate the transportation of goods, promote trade, thereby contributing to the socio -economic development of Phu Tho province in particular and the midland and mountainous areas of the North in general.

Previously, the collapse of the old Phong Chau bridge on September 9, 2024 caused severe damage, with two spans of the bridge collapsing. The Ministry of National Defense directed the installation of a temporary pontoon bridge. However, due to frequent changes in the water level of the Red River, the pontoon bridge had to stop operating many times, making it difficult for people to travel. The engineering force had to use ferries to help people cross the river.
